Meet Michaila Smith. In October of 2002, when Michaila was six years old, her parents took her into the doctor. She had been feeling under the weather, and had a mosquito bite that they were concerned might be West Nile Virus. What they thought was a minor illness, turned into a 2 week hospital stay and a devastating diagnosis. Michaila had juvenile diabetes. As a child, the changes in her diet, the prods and pricks, and the constant monitoring was a huge shift from the carefree life she had previously enjoyed. Since diagnosis, Michaila has been forced to monitor her blood sugar multiple times a day, change her diet, and has endured many hospital stays that threatened her well-being and, if she had gone untreated, her life. Throughout the monotonous daily life of a diabetic, Michaila lives as normally as possible – spending time with friends and family, drooling over Taylor Lautner, and living each day to its fullest potential. Butterfly Kisses has been blessed to be a part of Michaila’s courageous fight against juvenile diabetes.
